Banking APIs Weekly Analysis: The Fastest APIs

HSBC again is the fastest Banking API even as it languishes in the Amber Zone. The next five fastest Banking APIs are all NatWest Group brands, but Royal Bank of Scotland come somewhat further down the table. This isn’t necessarily something surprising. RBS and, especially, NatWest return a much longer list of ATMs and branches than Coutts (and Esme Loans doesn’t even have any). Coutts is a fast Banking API, but its DNS Lookup Time is affecting its performance especially from Azure. Even 28-29 ms is a very high fraction of the overall latency for a fast API. Matters are [...]

API Metrics Weekly Report: GitHub vs. Microsoft Office

GitHub is a perennially performant API, which this week again tops the Corporate Infrastructure API metrics. Usually, though Microsoft Office is the fastest API in the category, but not this week with GitHub pipping it to the top spot. GitHub is an excellent API. It is 3 ms faster overall than Microsoft Office, but it has a 100% pass rate compared to 99.99% and just 0.54% outliers compared to 2.21%, which is why Microsoft Office overall languishes at 12 out of 19 in terms of our API metrics CASC score. GitHub is fast for DNS lookup Time – 4 or [...]

API Metrics: Feb 2–9 | GitHub & Pager Duty

Something of interest in this week's API metrics Corporate Infrastructure is a pretty competitive API metrics category, with all APIs in the Green Zone and 9 out of 19 having a CASC score of over 9.00. If we look at outliers, we see there is a pretty large between the best performer, GitHub, with just 0.48% outliers, which comes top overall in terms of CASC score, and Pager Duty with 4.87% outliers – ten times as many. The seven best APIs in terms of outliers all have a CASC API metrics score of 9.18 or higher. We can see that [...]

Fintech API Metrics Weekly Report: Royal Bank of Scotland Wins!

Something of interest The Open Banking – UK – Production Fintech API metrics category is a big category. But let’s look at the Top Ten, but by outliers, not by CASC score. Now, what’s interesting is that the top three Fintech APIs by outliers are also the top three Fintech APIs by CASC score. You want to have a consistent service because that’s what your users want and you don’t want to have many outliers because they will affect user experience negatively, for instance, causing apps to time out. Tide takes the Fintech API title this week, but a photo [...]

API Metrics Fintech, Jan 25–Feb 1: Open Banking UK Production

Something of interest In Open Banking – UK – Production API metrics category, Nationwide has a degree of middle table respectability coming in at 19 out of 40 with a Green Zone CASC score of 8.36 and a 100% pass rate. It could do better, but it’s doing OK. But, as we discussed last week, in Open Banking – UK – Sandbox, Nationwide has been taking the overall wooden spoon amongst financial APIs. And here’s the thing: it’s the same four endpoints in both cases. Everything looks fine for the production endpoints. OAuth Access Token client_credentials could do with being [...]

API Metrics: Jan 25–Feb 1 | Google Oceania

Something of interestSocial Networks is a pretty competitive category for API metrics, which is not surprising given the centrality of social networks in contemporary life. Six out of 10 APIs have a CASC score over 9.00, and all but one have a CASC score of 8.52 or more and thus firmly in the Green Zone. Only Reddit is languishing in the Amber Zone this week. Twitter takes the API metrics title this week with a CASC score of 9.60, only 0.02 points ahead of Google, which actually has a better pass rate, outliers and median latency, so it is the [...]

API Ratings: Jan 18–25 | Messaging APIs

Something of interest Here’s something you don’t see every day – in fact, I don’t recall having seen it over the last year that we’ve been doing these API.expert reports: the Messaging APIs category has no API with a CASC score of 9.00 or more. Of the 9 Messaging APIs in the category, 7 of them are in the Green Zone with a CASC score of 8.00 or more. Cisco WebEx Teams, which has often languished, is in 7th place with a CASC score of 8.24. That’s a perfectly respectable CASC score as far as it goes. Zoom, topping the [...]

We look at over 100 fintech APIs and pull all the metrics together to give you a general feeling for the service quality for an organization’s APIs in a particular category with our patented CASC score. Something of interest API sandboxes are rarely perceived as being at the glamor end of the API ecosystem. And yet, they are vitally important in building the Open Banking world we all want to see flourish. An API sandbox should accurately reflect the behavior of the production. And it should also be available. [...]
