Tumblr was founded in 2007 by David Karp and Marco Arment, and it quickly grew into one of the most popular microblogging platforms on the internet. The company was acquired by Yahoo in 2013 and later by Verizon in 2017 as part of the larger Oath Inc. brand. In 2019, Tumblr was acquired by Automattic, the parent company of WordPress, with plans to revitalize the platform’s user base and functionality.

Tumblr’s infrastructure is built on a combination of custom and open-source technologies. Its API, the Tumblr API, allows developers to access a variety of data including user accounts, blog posts, likes, and followers. The Tumblr API uses OAuth authentication and supports both REST and JSON-RPC endpoints.

In terms of security, Tumblr has had several notable breaches. In 2013, a vulnerability in the platform’s code allowed hackers to gain access to user passwords and other personal information. In response, Tumblr reset all user passwords and advised users to change their login information. In 2018, Tumblr also announced a ban on adult content in response to concerns about inappropriate content and child safety.

In terms of performance, Tumblr has experienced occasional downtime in the past, although the frequency and severity of these incidents have decreased in recent years. The platform has made news on several occasions, particularly in relation to its content policies and user base. The aforementioned ban on adult content, for example, sparked controversy among some users who felt it was an unnecessary restriction on free expression. Despite these controversies, Tumblr remains a popular platform for sharing multimedia content and connecting with like-minded communities.
