Founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz and Eduardo Saverin as a social media platform – Facebook. Menlo Park in California, USA is where the company has its main office. Initially designed as a platform for Harvard pupils to connect, Facebook has grown into the most significant social network worldwide. Monthly active users exceed 2.8 billion.
Facebook declared in October 2021 that they would rename their company to ‘Meta’. The company believes that virtual and augmented reality technologies will be the next major computing platform; therefore, during their rebranding process they directed their focus towards these areas.
Creating a new parent company called Meta Platforms, Inc. to supervise its operations is one of the steps that Facebook will take during the rebranding process, according to their announcement. Facebook’s social media platform together with various apps including Instagram, WhatsApp and Oculus shall remain operational under the Facebook label. No additional sentence is required as the first one has already been completed.
Therefore, Facebook is now functioning as a subsidiary of Meta Platforms, Inc., and both enterprises are possessed and managed by Mark Zuckerberg.
Acquiring Instagram in 2012 and WhatsApp in 2014 are just two examples of the significant milestones that mark Facebook’s development as a company. The company has increased its offerings by adding Facebook Messenger, Facebook Watch, and Facebook Marketplace. In order to stay ahead of the curve, Facebook plans on investing more into emerging technologies including virtual and augmented reality while simultaneously broadening their e-commerce capabilities.
A huge network of servers, data centers and APIs constitutes the infrastructure of Facebook. Several APIs are utilized by the company to grant access to its platform’s features and data for developers.
The Facebook Graph API offers developers a way to access user data like profile information, photos and posts.
The creation and management of Facebook advertising campaigns, including ad placement and targeting options, is possible for developers through the use of the Facebook Ads API.
To protect user data, Facebook has implemented several measures and takes security and user privacy seriously. These measures comprise encryption, access controls, and regular security audits. In prior incidents, the company experienced various serious security breaches. The exposure of millions of user’s personal data was revealed during the 2018 Cambridge Analytica scandal.
To maintain high availability and reliability of its API performance – a critical aspect of its operations – Facebook has implemented various measures. These consist of load balancing, caching and monitoring tools. Technical problems or maintenance upgrades may cause intermittent interruptions despite the fact that Facebook has not experienced any significant downtime in recent years.
