Facebook is a social media platform founded by Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz, and Eduardo Saverin in 2004. The company is headquartered in Menlo Park, California, USA. Initially launched as a social networking site for Harvard students, Facebook has since grown to become the world’s largest social media platform, with over 2.8 billion monthly active users.
In October 2021, Facebook announced that it was rebranding the company to “Meta.” The rebranding was accompanied by a shift in the company’s focus towards virtual and augmented reality technologies, which the company believes will be the next major computing platform.
As part of the rebranding, Facebook also announced that it would be creating a new parent company called “Meta Platforms, Inc.” to oversee its operations. Facebook’s social media platform, as well as its other apps and services such as Instagram, WhatsApp, and Oculus, will continue to operate under the Facebook brand.
So in essence, Facebook is now operating as a subsidiary of Meta Platforms, Inc., and both companies are owned and led by Mark Zuckerberg.
Facebook’s evolution as a company has been marked by several key milestones, including its acquisition of Instagram in 2012 and WhatsApp in 2014. The company has also expanded its services to include Facebook Messenger, Facebook Watch, and Facebook Marketplace. In the future, Facebook plans to continue investing in emerging technologies such as virtual and augmented reality and to expand its e-commerce capabilities.
Facebook’s infrastructure is built on a massive network of servers, data centers, and APIs. The company uses several APIs to provide developers with access to its platform’s features and data, including:
Facebook Graph API: This API provides developers with access to Facebook’s user data, including profile information, photos, and posts.
Facebook Ads API: This API enables developers to create and manage Facebook advertising campaigns, including targeting options and ad placement.
Facebook takes security and user privacy seriously and has implemented several measures to protect user data. These include encryption, access controls, and regular security audits. However, the company has experienced several significant security breaches in the past, including the Cambridge Analytica scandal in 2018, which exposed the personal data of millions of users.
API performance is critical to Facebook’s operations, and the company has implemented several measures to ensure high availability and reliability. These include load balancing, caching, and monitoring tools. Facebook has not experienced any significant downtime in recent years, but occasional outages can occur due to technical issues or maintenance updates.
