President Ulysses S. Grant founded the Dept of Justice on July 1, 1870. It was established to execute federal law and champion the legal interests of the United States. Defending America in court while also prosecuting federal crimes and offering legal guidance for government agencies & POTUS are part of DOJ’s duties.
The Dept of Justice has expanded over time to encompass various agencies and offices. Agencies like The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and The Bureau Of Alcohol,Tobacco ,Firearms And Explosives (ATF) have been included. Civil rights enforcement, consumer protection and combating corruption are all critical responsibilities of the Dept of Justice.
