API Movers and Shakers: Your Weekly API Performance Report

Once again, U.S. Government APIs are not doing so well. FEMA in the US Government Collection was in the Red Zone with a CASC score of 5.72. This was primarily due to an outage on the 7th of March, which saw the requests to most endpoints timeout. There was also a scattering of failures throughout […]

DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) is a government department in the UK that was founded in 2001. It was formed as a result of a merger between the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and part of the Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions. The department is responsible for policy and regulations related to the environment, food production, and rural communities in the UK.

Since its founding, DEFRA has evolved to include a greater focus on sustainability and climate change, as well as on animal welfare and biodiversity. Its plans for the future include a commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, supporting sustainable food production and consumption, and protecting and enhancing the UK’s natural environment.

DEFRA’s infrastructure includes a range of databases and systems used for monitoring and managing environmental data, such as the UK Air Quality Archive and the National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory. It also uses various APIs to integrate data from different sources, including: API: provides access to UK government data, including DEFRA datasets related to air quality, climate change, and wildlife conservation.

Environment Agency API: provides access to real-time data on flood warnings and river levels across England.

Met Office API: provides access to weather forecasts and climate data for the UK and other locations around the world.

In terms of security, DEFRA has measures in place to protect against cyber threats and data breaches, including regular security assessments and training for staff. It has not had any significant breaches reported in the media.

As a government department, DEFRA’s APIs are not typically subject to the same performance metrics and monitoring as those used by commercial companies. However, the department has stated its commitment to using technology and data to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of its services.

In terms of downtime, DEFRA’s systems and APIs may occasionally experience downtime due to maintenance or other technical issues, but any such incidents are typically resolved quickly and with minimal impact on users.

DEFRA has made news in recent years for its role in developing policies related to Brexit and the UK’s departure from the European Union, as well as for its efforts to combat climate change and protect the UK’s natural environment.
