This week I spoke at the APIDays Banking Event in Berlin. The topic of my talk was a riff on the title of Robert Persig’s 1974 classic, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. If you haven’t read it, like many classics it’s not always an easy read. It’s a novelized discourse on the nature of what is ‘good’ – a topic which drives the protagonist mad.
We’ve felt the same way about APIs – there are so many places you can monitor, and ways you can monitor, and data that monitoring delivers, it becomes almost impossible to definitely say whether something is good or bad.
However, in the world of PSD2, there is an explicit requirement for the participants to ensure that they meet suitable quality standards – and, importantly, be able to prove it quantitatively.
Finally – and this will become critical – banks and other institutions will all become dependent upon each other. We will be making the move from a one-to-one relationship between financial services providers to a one-to-many relationship. Institutions will be only as good as the weakest link in the chain.
